Father's Day Primary Gift Idea

I've been reading talks that Elder L. Tom Perry gave. What a blessing to humanity he was, and is! His messages were always clear and spirit filled.

I found a talk entitled, Father-Your Role, Your Responsibility. He was a champion of women. I felt so uplifted by the encouragement he gave men. I especially liked the quote (in regards to loving your wife), "...It is a twenty-four-hour-a-day job to show appreciation and consideration for her."

A quote from the above mentioned talk was the inspiration for a SIMPLE Father's Day Gift. Just attach an Almond Joy to the following printed on cardstock and have the children draw a picture of something that they do with their dad/grandpa that brings them joy. I always glue their art on construction paper to make a nice mat finish.

I'm not a very tech savvy person. I tried my best to get it so you could print by yourself. (Mouse over the right hand corner, click on the box with the arrow, it will direct you to googledocs where you can then click print)

But if that doesn't work, please feel free to email me and I'll get you a PDF copy if you'd like.

Happy Father's Day!!!

Father's Day Gift Idea

We're doing brownies in clear plastic cups, placed in clear bags and tied with ribbon.
Then we'll print off this poem (you can click on it for a better view) on cardstock and let the children draw pictures and add a few reasons why they love ________________.

I left it blank on purpose so that it doesn't necessarily have to be for a dad. It can be for a grandpa or uncle or even a brother!!

I wrote this poem, feel free to use for non-commercial purposes.

Brownie points for ______________ !
Always giving, always kind.
Serving all our family,
True charity defined!

If you'd like a pdf file of it, feel free to email me. I'll get it to you as quickly as I can!

If you're in the Reno/Sparks, NV area, we're also attaching free book coupons to Grassroots books!

An Art Project For Father's Day for Kids

I saw this art project on pinterest, but it didn't come with drawing instructions. The shapes are pretty easy though and my 6 year old, Maria, was able to do this with no problems. I did do a practice sheet with Maria on the sideways U shapes for the hand and drawing lines diagonal on the body.

The girls decorated their Super Hero Dad and Super Hero Papa with crayons and watercolors. We use water color paper (you can buy at Michael's), it's thicker and always produces better work. They drew first with permanent markers.

On the back they wrote:
My Dad, My Super Hero!
2 favorite memories with Dad or Papa (our Grandpa)
3 things they love about them
Why their dad or papa is a super hero

We laminated and I wrote dates and ages at the top.

Is this feasible for primary? No. Unless you only have 3 kids in primary, then yes. But it might be something fun to do at home if you like to encourage the artistic process in kids.

My Dad - My Hero... A Father's Day Idea for LDS Primary

Super Hero Image courtesy creative commons license flickr.com by kagey b 6/25/2007
I am in no way endorsing marvel comics by posting this image. Just wish I could look so cool in spandex.

Feel free to use the following and change (to uncle, brother or grandpa... know your children's needs!):
(By Sofia Lykes 2010)

Oh Yes my daddy is my hero!
He's a super kind of guy-
Amazing and fantastic,
Quite the apple of my eye!

He lifts me up and loves me,
He helps me reach the sky.
Everything is perfect
when I stick by his side!

Following the Savior,
in His footsteps all the while-
I'm grateful for my Father
who can always makes me smile!

Activity: Have a hero sandwich station!! Let the children choose from a variety of different ingredients to make their dad a special treat! (Not enough in the budget? Have the children make special coupons for their dad to cash in at home...a lunchtime picnic where the children are in charge!)

LDS Primary Father's Day Gift

Bunched Crayons courtesy creative commons license flickr.com by cavitt April 2009

I feel like sometimes I'm a little repetitive, but I can't say this enough. KNOW YOUR CHILDREN. BE SENSITIVE to their needs. If there is no father in the home, change the words to grandpa or uncle or brother!!

You will need:
2 large sheets of paper for the child to take home
1 copy of the poem/instructions
1 ziploc bag full of crayons
2 rubber bands
** Manilla Envelope to put everything in or stapled file folders.... you decide what's best so they don't loose anything!
**Another addition could be a couple of gummy fruit snack bags for them to munch on while they talk and draw.

Brief Explanation:

This is a gift designed for time with daddy. A special art activity that is simple and encourages more love in the home. When they get home they are to divvy up the color crayons between dad and child. For each crayon they pass out they have to tell one reason why they love the other person. After the crayons are divided, put a rubber band around the ones you've got and let the inner Van Gogh out! Trade crayons if you need different colors, just make sure to give more reasons why you love your dad!

Poem/Instructions (by Sofia Lykes May 2009):

One crayon can make a drawing,
simple, straight and nice...
But put a bunch together
and there's something to entice!!

My Father is real special,
a man of many gifts!
Capable and loving,
he inspires and uplifts.

I love my daddy dearest,
he's strong and full of fun...
His qualities are many
and he's second next to none!!

Instructions:
1. Go home and pass out one crayon at a time to each other. As you do so, say a reason why you love each other!
2. Put a rubber band around the group of crayons and let your inner Van Gogh go wild!
3. Display your art proudly! Express your love often!
4. Have a very Happy Father's Day!!
